What to Expect During Upper and Lower Eyelid Surgery

Doctor marking woman's eyelids to prepare for eyelid surgery You may be considering eyelid surgery to improve how your eyes look or feel. At West Houston Plastic Surgery, Dr. Alfonso Barrera and Dr. Eric Ruff perform blepharoplasty with careful attention to function and appearance.

Located in Houston, Texas, their practice offers this rejuvenating procedure in a comfortable outpatient setting.

How Eyelid Surgery Works (and What It’s Really Like)

For upper eyelid surgery, your surgeon will make a small incision in the natural fold of your eyelid. That’s where they’ll remove extra skin and, if needed, a little bit of fat. Because the incision sits right in that crease, the scar is usually barely noticeable once it heals.

Lower eyelid surgery is slightly different. Most of the time, the incision is placed just below your lash line, or sometimes on the inside of the eyelid (that’s called the transconjunctival approach). This allows the surgeon to carefully remove or shift fat to smooth out under-eye bags. If you have loose skin in that area, it might also be trimmed or tightened. In some cases, laser or chemical resurfacing may be added to improve skin texture, but your surgeon will talk with you about whether that’s needed.

What You Can Expect Before, During, and After

Dr. Barrera and Dr. Ruff perform eyelid surgery using IV sedation and local anesthesia. The surgery usually takes one to two hours, and you’ll go home the same day. Just make sure someone’s there to drive you and stay with you for the first 24 hours.

It’s normal to have some swelling and bruising during the first week. Using cold compresses and sleeping with your head elevated can make a big difference. Around days seven to 10, many people feel ready to ease back into makeup and daily routines. You might notice some light sensitivity or dryness at first, but eye drops and sunglasses usually do the trick.

Trusted Hands, Proven Results

Dr. Barrera brings over three decades of surgical experience to every procedure, backed by dual board certification in Plastic Surgery and Otolaryngology. He has been serving patients in Houston since 1985. Dr. Ruff complements this with advanced training in aesthetic surgery, along with a strong background gained across top hospitals in Texas.
