What is reconstructive hair transplantation?

Sometimes people may develop hair loss after an accident, a burn, the removal of a tumor, or due to congenital circumstances. This can happen on the scalp but also on the beard, mustache, eyebrows, or eyelashes. These are cases that can be helped immensely.

How is reconstructive hair transplantation performed?

The transplant process begins with a thorough consultation. In this exam, Alfonso Barrera, M.D., F.A.C.S.,  evaluates the patient’s scalp and hair to determine the best approach.

During the surgery, the doctor harvests hair follicles from a donor area, typically the back of the scalp, because the hair there is more resistant to balding. The donor strip is usually only one centimeter wide by 5-20 centimeters long (although the exact size depends on the number of grafts planned).

Next, the follicles are carefully transplanted to the recipient area. Dr. Barrera himself transplants every single graft on all his patients. He uses advanced techniques to ensure natural-looking results. The procedure requires precision and expertise to achieve optimal density and coverage, blending seamlessly with existing hair.

Testimonial

“I have seen Dr. Barrera and his staff 3 times over nearly 20 years. I would not go anywhere else. The staff is exceptional and Dr. Barrera is highly skilled. The post-surgery follow-up is outstanding by both the staff and Dr. Barrera. They over-deliver which is rare these days. BTW, I travel to Houston from some distance because I believe they provide some of the very best hair transplant work/services in the country.”

When will I start to see results?

Initially, your transplanted hair grows for about 10-15 days, but then some of it temporarily sheds, goes into a rest phase (this is normal). But in 3-4 months, most of these follicular units return to the growth phase and start growing new hairs. After five or six months you’ll see significant hair growth but takes a year for the final result.

It is not uncommon that a second and sometimes a 3rd session may be needed to further increase the hair density, especially on scarred areas.

Is reconstructive hair transplantation permanent?

The hair growth will continue for as long as the hair was genetically programmed to grow on the donor area. Hair from the back of the scalp is usually not prone to be affected by male or female pattern hair loss, so it will usually keep growing for a lifetime.

How Do I Know if I Am a Good Candidate for Reconstructive Hair Transplantation?

A woman looking at her scalp, considering a reconstructive hair transplantDetermining if you are a suitable candidate for reconstructive hair transplantation involves several factors. Ideal candidates are those who:

  • Have experienced hair loss from trauma, burns, surgeries, or congenital conditions
  • Have healthy hair growth in other parts of your scalp or body to serve as donor areas
  • Are in good overall health (this is crucial to ensure a smooth recovery)

During the consultation, Dr. Barrera will address your medical history, hair loss pattern, and expectations to determine your suitability for the procedure.

How Long Does the Procedure Take?

The duration varies based on the severity of the hair loss and the number of grafts required.

Generally, the surgery can take anywhere from 4-8 hours. This includes the time needed to harvest follicles from the donor area, prepare the grafts, and meticulously transplant them to the recipient site.

What Should I Expect During the Recovery Period After a Reconstructive Hair Transplant?

The initial recovery period involves some discomfort, swelling, and redness in the donor and recipient areas. These symptoms typically subside within a week. Small scabs will form around the transplanted hair follicles. They generally fall off in about 7 to 10 days.

It’s crucial to follow Dr. Barrera’s post-operative instructions. They will include:

  • Avoiding strenuous activities
  • Refraining from touching or scratching the treated areas
  • Taking prescribed medications to control pain and prevent infection

How Soon Can I Return To Work After Undergoing Reconstructive Hair Transplantation?

Most patients can return to work about 2-5 days following the procedure. The exact amount of time varies depending on the nature of their job and their individual healing process.

If your job requires intense physical activity, Dr. Barrera may recommend taking additional time off. Remember that while you may resume normal activities relatively quickly, you should still be cautious and follow post-procedure guidelines to avoid compromising the results.

Will I Need To Follow Any Special Hair Care Routines After the Transplant?

A man touching his hair after a reconstructive hair transplantAfter a reconstructive transplant, you will need to adhere to a specific hair care routine to ensure optimal healing and growth. Dr. Barrera will provide detailed instructions, which may include:

  • Practicing gentle washing techniques
  • Avoiding direct sunlight
  • Using prescribed shampoos and topical treatments
  • Avoiding styling products or tools that generate heat for the first few weeks.

The doctor will schedule regular follow-up appointments to monitor your progress. If needed, he will make adjustments to your hair care regimen during these sessions as well.
