Should you have a breast lift or a breast augmentation?

Maybe you’ve gone through years of pregnancy or breastfeeding, or maybe you’ve always wanted a few more curves. If you have decided it is time to make a change with your chest, you have a few different options available to you, such as a breast augmentation or a breast lift.

What is the difference between a breast lift and a breast augmentation?

Both of these procedures can dramatically change how your breasts look, but they do so in very different ways. In a breast augmentation procedure, implants are inserted into the chest to give volume and increase the size of breasts. These implants might be made of saline or silicone – your doctor can discuss with you the benefits and disadvantages of each and can advise you which would be best for you.

Implants may need to be replaced over time. Silicone implants may last for 10 to 15 years before they need to be replaced, but saline implants can be permanent if they aren’t causing any problems.

In a breast lift, excess skin is removed and the remaining tissue is contoured and tightened. It is often used for breasts that have become saggy after a dramatic weight loss, pregnancy, or nursing.

Which procedure is right for you?

The right procedure for you depends on what you are trying to correct and what results you would like to see. Many patients get both procedures – a breast lift to firm up sagging tissue along with a breast augmentation to increase size and firmness.

Before having a breast procedure, you should know that it is important that you do so because it is what you want – you should do it for yourself and not to please anyone else! You should also be in good overall health and have realistic expectations for the outcome.
