Saline or Silicone? Your Choices for Breast Augmentation

Pretty Woman Posing in LingerieIf you have always been self-conscious about the size of your breasts, you may have decided that it is finally time to go ahead with that breast enlargement procedure. But now you have some other things to decide on, such as what kind of implant should you get?

What Are Your Implant Choices?

There are two different options when choosing your implants: saline filled and silicone filled. Of course, Dr. Barrera will discuss with you the pros and cons of each, but here are some things you should know.

Silicone-filled implants contain a soft, elastic gel. Because they are filled before implantation, they may require a longer incision. Many patients say that silicone implants feel more natural than saline implants.

Saline implants are filled with sterile saltwater. They may be filled before implantation or filled at the time of surgery so that minor modifications in size can be made. Both saline and silicone filled have a solid silicone rubber outer shell.

Whichever type you get, implants (most likely) will not last forever. Saline-filled implants, if they don’t cause you any problems, can be left in as long as you’d like. However, silicone implants should be switched out with a new pair after 10 to 15 years, as the implant wall can become weak.

With either type of implant, Dr. Barrera will make the scar as small as he can, although scarring will vary from patient to patient. The recovery is very similar for breast augmentation patients no matter which implant they choose. Your breasts will be wrapped in gauze or you will be given a surgical bra to wear. You will be able to go home soon after the surgery, and you should only feel minimal pain and discomfort.
