Detailed Description of Laser Skin Resurfacing

Skin resurfacing with the UltraPulse laster is rapid and gentle. Because the treatment is bloodless and does not involve chemicals that cover the surface of the skin, Dr. Barrera is able to clearly see exactly how much tissue to treat and remove during the procedure.

Dr. Barrera prepares his patients a month in advance with the use of (AHA) Alpha Hydroxy Acid, or by using Retin-A. Depending upon the type of skin he may also recommend a bleaching cream made out of Hydroquinone, to minimize risks of hyperpigmentation and accelerate the healing.

Patients having laser surgery generally receive a local anesthetic to ensure comfort during the procedure. A fast, sharp laser beam actually reacts with water, vaporizing the cells it hits. The skin imperfections are quickly and accurately treated layer-by-layer without bleeding, leaving the patient with less wrinkles and a more natural and even-colored facial skin.

In the first few days after the procedure, your skin will "weep" as it repairs itself. It will then go through a period of crusting for a few days. When the crusting is gone, the fresh new skin will have a pink quality, which will fade over a period of approximately three months.

This pinkness is easily camouflaged by makeup, which can usually be applied in 7-10 days, depending upon the response of your skin to the treatment.

Post-procedure discomfort is usually minor, requiring little or no medication. However, because pain tolerance is highly individual, Dr. Barrera will make sure that you are kept comfortable during and after your resurfacing procedure.
