Pigmented Lesion Removal with the Q-switched Ruby Laser
|
The Q-switched ruby laser has been chosen by members of the American Academy of Dermatology as the treatment of choice for all types of benign pigment.
There are several treatment options available, but none are as effective on all types of pigment as the ruby laser. Liquid nitrogen, and argon laser therapy are commonly used on epidermal pigment, but the pigment often returns. And other lasers can cause embarrassing "bruises" at the therapy site with no better results. Currently the ruby laser represents the only treatment option for dermal lesions.
Below are some frequently asked questions with answers about pigmented lesions and their removal with the Q-switched ruby laser.
What causes pigmented lesions?
Pigmented lesions are caused by a proliferation of melanocytes in the skin. Melanocytes are the cells that contain melanosomes, which in turn manufacture melanin (the dark pigment in the skin). Exposure to ultraviolet light, such as the sun, stimulates the production of melanin, and many pigmented lesions (such as solar lentigos) are actually caused by repeated exposure to the sun.
How does ruby laser therapy work? A short pulse of intense red light emitted by the ruby laser passes harmlessly through the top layers of skin until it is selectively absorbed by the melanosome, usually located in the epidermal/dermal junction of the skin. This laser energy causes the melanosome to fragment into minute particles that are removed by your body's immune system. .

What kind of results can I expect?
The Q-switched ruby laser provides the best results available on the removal of all types of benign pigmented lesions. How well your pigmented lesion responds depends on a number of factors. Superficial (epidermal) lesions such as freckles and age spots tend to respond more quickly than deeper (dermal) lesions such as junctional nevi or nevus of Ota. After only one treatment with the ruby laser, many pigmented lesions clear completely
