Dr. Alfonso Barrera always saw himself becoming a physician.

Even as a child growing up in Monterrey, Mexico, he always dreamed of being a doctor. "My uncle was a doctor, and my dad was a dentist, and I always loved Dr. Kildare and Ben Casey (on television)," recalls Dr. Barrera. He followed his dream and graduated from medical school in Monterrey, after which he did his general surgery residency at Methodist Hospitals of Dallas.

What drew him toward plastic surgery was that "you an see the results promptly." He found plastic surgery very gratifying. "I liked the idea of helping kids with birth defects, as well as restoring normal appearance in a woman who has had a mastectomy."

After Dallas, he attended Harvard in Boston and Massachusetts General, and Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, where he trained in otolaryngology for three years, 1980-1983. From 1983 to 1985 he did his plastic surgery residency at St. Joseph Hospital in Houston.

Dr. Barrera says, "Being a diplomate of both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology...gives me a unique background in rhinoplasty and facial plastic surgery."

After more than ten years in private practice, Dr. Barrera believes he can communicate well with patients. "I talk to them at length to get a grasp of what they want." He also uses computer video imaging to ensure that he and the patient are in agreement. The changes the prospective patient sees drawn on the computer screen provides "a close idea of what he or she will look like after surgery."

Dr. Barrera developed his sense of aesthetics as a natural extension of his interest in art and drawing. Most important in a plastic surgeon, he believes, are "common sense and a good artistic inclination."

Dr. Barrera screens his patients for "realistic expectations". He has found that, in general, people are more knowledgeable about cosmetic surgery than in the past.

Promoting healthy living is a part of Dr. Barrera's personal philosophy. He swims, water skis, snow skis and hunts.

And what pleases the doctor most? "Seeing my family and friends healthy and happy." And professionally? "I'd like to do less paperwork and more surgery."
